{meta}physical computing is a course of 10 Physical Computing workshops exploring Processing and Arduino. It will run weekly from November through to mid January at Huddersfield’s Digital Research Unit.

The course runs 3 – 4 hours a week for a period of 10 weeks. The cost of a course subscription is 150 pounds per person, and places are limited to 15.

da[n] will be staging a ‘Big Draw‘ workshop for Sunday, 8th October 2006. 11 am to 3 pm. Crossley Gallery, Dean Clough, Halifax. FREE

It will be a drop-in event for all ages. Children will need adult supervision.

“A colony of ‘scribblebots’ [tame robots that can draw] will be making a huge drawing on the gallery floor. Come along, programme a ‘scribblebot’ and then set it loose!”

In the Wolf Olins Room, Dean Clough, on Saturday 11th March, da[n] will be presenting bookworks by Jason Payne (with Nigel Murgatroyd) and Rob Lycett.
11 am to 6 pm

‘Jay’s Diaries’ was inspired by Nigel Murgatroyd, who has edited a selection of images for a future da[n] exhibition. Nigel previously exhibited ’50 buses’ in the ‘Sir Richard Young Gallery’ at Dean Clough.

‘i’ by LoVid [USA]

In the Viaduct Theatre, Dean Clough, on Saturday 8th October, DA[N] will be presenting ‘i’ by LoVid.
10 am to 4 pm [audio/video installation]

LoVid [Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus] processes electrical signal to make live audiovisuals where the mediums intersect; the video is the music and the audio is the image. We are interested in introducing inherent features of each medium into the other’s and in circumventing limitations in any given medium by traversing to another. Working with the constraints/freedoms and fragility/fundamentality of analog technology, our videos and objects are conceived as traces from a parallel civilization where media is tangible and emotional. LoVid’s projects include engineering and manufacturing of analog video synthesizers, textile design and patchwork of video stills transferred onto fabric, abstract audiovisual compositions and recordings, live video performances, and mixed media installations.

At Dean Clough’s ‘Sir Richard Young Gallery’, on Saturday 9th July, DA[N] will be presenting ‘Fifty Buses’ by Nigel Murgatroyd.

‘Fifty Buses’ is an extraordinary collection of digital images by photographer Nigel Murgatroyd. Buses are captured in motion and the resulting graphic images are minimalist and abstract to the extreme.

Presenting research overviewing the Glitch:Aesthetic, including aspects of the ‘glitchalike’ and an intruduction to a forthcoming publication, written with Tony Scott, on the subject of Glitch Art.

Joe Gilmore is a sound artist and a founder of the rand()% internet radio station. He is currently working on a sound installation for Lovebytes 2005 [www.lovebytes.org.uk] with American artist Andrea Polli. Joe will be performing a 40 minute audio set in Dean Clough’s Viaduct Theatre.

8th International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair

At Dean Clough’s ‘Wolff Olins Room’, on Saturday 12th March 2005, DA[N] will be screening a programme of digital video artworks.

This event compliments the ’8th International Contemporary Artists’ Book Fair’, which is at Dean Clough from 11am to 6pm that day.

DA[N] will also distributing a free DVD sampler which will include the following works.

‘Composition for OHP’ and ‘Numberstation’ by Rob Lycett

At Dean Clough’s ‘Sir Richard Young Gallery’, on Saturday 29th January 2005, DA[N] presented ‘Composition for OHP’ and ‘Numberstation’ by Rob Lycett.

‘Composition for OHP’ is an optical illusion machine. An autonomous robotic system, with ultrasonic sensors, controls the arrangement of acetates on an overhead projector. The multi-layered composition attempts to rationalise a three dimensional space, within the confines of a flat surface.

Wander outside the normal shortwave frequency bands and you might just encounter strange voices reading long lists of five digit numbers. No one really knows who is sending or receiving these broadcasts. Some people believe that they are secret messages, broadcast by governments for their spies abroad. ‘Numberstation’ by Rob Lycett, broadcasts encrypted [secret] messages in the form of a list of 200 five digit numbers.

‘draw’ & ‘re:draw’ by Rob Lycett

At Dean Clough’s ‘Sir Richard Young Gallery’, on Saturday 4th December, DA[N] presented ‘draw’ & ‘re:draw’ by Rob Lycett.

‘re:draw’ is a site specific installation, created especially for this event. It will be projected as a piece of infinite cinema. GPS coordinates from physical explorations of the Dean Clough landcape will be visualised in real time and accompanied by a soundscape influenced by the journey data.

‘draw’ is a series of large format books created entirely by a generative computer programme written by Rob Lycett.

Versions of ‘re:draw’ have previously been exhibited at Sightsonic 2004[York], Huddersfield University and Folly [Lancaster].
